A kitchen is a room or part of a room used for cooking and preparing food in a home or commercial establishment. In the west, a modern kitchen is usually equipped with a stove, a sink with hot and cold running water, a refrigerator, countertops and kitchen cabinets in modular design. Many families have microwaves, dishwashers, and other equipment. The main function of a kitchen is to serve as a place to store, cook and prepare food (and perform tasks such as washing dishes), but also for meals, entertainment, and laundry.
Commercial kitchens can be found in restaurants, cafes, hotels, hospitals, educational and work facilities, military barracks, and similar facilities. These kitchens are usually larger and equipped with larger and more durable appliances than a kitchen-diner. For example, a large restaurant can have a large fridge and a large dishwasher washer. In industrialized countries, commercial kitchens are generally subject to public health laws. They are regularly inspected by public health officials and must be closed if they do not meet the sanitary requirements of the law.
